CHAPTER TEN

Kay, Kevin, and Cecil stood in the hallway as the doctor and nurses worked on Kayla. Kay was distraught and walked down to the Prayer Room. Cecil walked towards the stairs. Kevin waited til he was out of sight and followed Kay. He wanted to pray for his daughter, too. He kneeled by the altar right next to her.

“You didn’t have to come in,” she said.

Kevin whispered, “I needed to pray for our daughter.”

Kay reached for his hand and he reached for hers. She laid her head on his chest. Then a beautiful ray of light shined in from the stained glass window as if God had said, “I am watching over your baby.”

Cecil stood in the back of the room and watched as they held each other. He never wanted to believe that Kay would or could even have feelings for Kevin. She couldn’t not after all these years. He opened and closed the door to get their attention. “The doctor wants to talk to you, Kay.”

Kay ran down to Kayla’s room, and Kevin was headed out of the Prayer Room too.

Cecil grabbed him under his arm, “I know you two have a daughter, but if I even think you trying to fuck Kay again, I’ll put you so far deep in the ground that the DEVIL won’t recognize your ass!”

Kevin jerked away. “Man, that shit was over a long time ago. I LOVE YOUR SISTER, REMEMBER.”

A crying couple walked in as they were arguing. Kevin and Cecil bowed their heads, and rushed up out of there.

Kay breathed a sigh of relief, “Thank God, Kayla was stable. Thank you doctor for all that you have done for my baby, but I need to know how this happened?”

Dr. Hardy said, “I’m not sure how it happened. You might need to talk with her captain.”

Kay walked over to Cecil, “I’m going to the GOT DAMN BARRACKS! Somebody gonna give me some DAMN answers!”

Cecil tried to calm her down, “Let’s go to the military police, and see if they know anything.”

Kevin jumped in the conversation and said, “The local police probable would be the ones handling her case since it happened off the base.”

Cecil joked, “Baby daddy might be right!”

Kevin began walking towards the stairs. “This ain’t the time or the place for your smart ass remarks! I’m not the bad guy. I’ll just catch the bus back home.” He called Cleo, and told her to meet him as the bus stop in Macon.

Kay and Cecil went to the police department to get some answers. When they got there, the dispatcher called the officer who was handling the case.

“I’m Officer Beaumont,” he said.

“I’m Kay Monroe and this is my fiance Cecil. My daughter, Kayla Monroe, was in a car accident last night. I need to know how this happened.”

The officer explained, “Ma’am, all I can tell you is that we’re looking into all possibilities. We have investigators checking her car, and officers questioning some residents that live in the area where the accident occurred.
